A Certain Romance

"oh they might wear classic reeboks or knackered converse or tracky bottoms tucked in socks,
but all of that is what the point is not..."

Born With Stripes

Born With Stripes

Classic indie goodness here from another young UK band successfully extracted once again from the lovely bandcamp. A summer anthem of a tune here. Enjoy.

Born With Stripes - “…You Stole The Laces From My Shoes”.

Hella Better Dancer

Hella Better Dancer

If there is a website which I love these days, it’s Bandcamp. Thanks to sites like this, it feels like we’re crawling right into an emerging band’s practice.

Which brings us to Hella Better Dancer, a very young-seeming UK band. They’ve made their “Living Room” EP available as a free download via their bandcamp site and lead tune “Brother” is a slow molasses build of a tune. I love it. Enjoy.

Hella Better Dancer - “Brother”.

Best Friends

Best Friends

The Brits are sounding more California these days than the Californians are. These youngsters from Sheffield have written a serious summer anthem here. Yeah, it’s been around since earlier this year, but this tune is still as catchy as anything. Enjoy.

Best Friends - “Break My Neck”.

Great Elk - “Two Weeks”

Great Elk

“Could I convince you to love me ‘til we’re old?”.

On constant repeat. I love this tune. Enjoy.

Great Elk - “Two Weeks”.

Earthquake Party!

Earthquake Party!

More noisy, catchy pop. Always what the doctor ordered. This Massachusetts band called Earthquake Party! released a cassette called “Vs. Pizza” back in 2011 and it just barely found my ears. Listen to the 3-song cassette at the bandcamp site and download the killer lead tune below. Awesome video at Vimeo. Enjoy.

Earthquake Party! - “Pretty Little Hand”.

A Baker’s Dozen: Volume 21

Zip file of all songs.

Danny Malone - Bootleg!

Danny Malone

It’s been far too long since I’ve had a fix of new Danny Malone material so I decided to make my own bootleg of sorts. Courtesy of YouTube audio ripping technology, I pulled the audio tracks for tunes he performed at a house party in Conroe, Texas, back in October 2010. And the audio quality is actually decent.

If you’ve followed me here, you know that I think Danny Malone is a songwriting genius (my plea from last year). Just listen to the first few tunes here if you are not yet a convert. Best of luck to this Austin gem. I’m excited to see him at SXSW next week. And the great news is that a new album is imminent (details here). Enjoy.

Danny Malone - “Sailing”.
Danny Malone - “Junebug”.
Danny Malone - “Wait On Me”.

Danny Malone live at “Piney Woods”, Conroe, Texas, October 2010. Full 20 song zip file right here (do the old ‘right click, save as’ routine) (fyi - no clue what the actual song order was).

Evans The Death

Evans The Death

When it comes to music, I don’t think I’ll ever be older than about 19. I was 19 in 1988 and think about the great indiepop/C86/twee/Sarah/Creation/etc action happening in the late 1980s. Yeah. So, you can forgive me if I’m a bit fixated on that sound still. Which brings us to Evans The Death who tap into that great era of noisy pop bliss without being derivative. This is pure pop joy, well executed with huge hooks, unhinged drumming, that bass rumble, and melodies galore. I love it. As a debut double-A side single, this is quite legendary. Enjoy.

Evans The Death - “Threads”.
Evans The Death - “I’m So Unclean”.
Video for new single “Telling Lies” here.

Literature

Literature

I know it’s only March, but I’ve been listening to this album all year already and I am going to predict now that this will be the best album of 2012. Yep. This may very well be one of my favorite albums ever. It’s a perfect mix of what I love in music - catchy riffs, great melodies, awesome dynamics, and a ton of jangle. This is an Austin band that carries on in the footsteps of the legendary Voxtrot and I can’t wait to see them at SXSW. Incredible album. Get it via bandcamp here.

Literature - “Criminal Kids”.
Literature - “Push Up Bra”.
Literature - “Grifted”.

The Arrogants

The Arrogants

(Disclaimer: Regressive self-indulgence in full bloom here)

I used to be this band called The Arrogants from 1997-2005. We released three CD’s with tunes sounding like knock-off’s of both The Sundays and The Primitives. The free MP3 downloads have always been available here. Now, I’ve made all three releases available for streaming at the glorious bandcamp here. Enjoy.

The Arrogants - “I Want You” : Bandcamp / MP3.
The Arrogants - “Lovesick” : Bandcamp / MP3.
The Arrogants - “Antony & Cleopatra” : Bandcamp / MP3.
